State-of-the-Art Railcars

Pacer Stacktrain currently operates a fleet of more than 1,800 railcars. These “stackcars” or “well cars” are the most technologically advanced railcars ever designed for the movement of containers. This configuration provides a very smooth ride which is excellent for high-value or damage-sensitive merchandise.

These lightweight stackcars consist primarily of five-platform units and are capable of carrying 10 containers each. The containers are stacked two high on each platform (hence the term double-stack) and are securely linked to each other with heavy-duty interbox connectors at each corner. These are the same connector devices that secure containers above-deck on ocean vessels. Individual platforms have different lengths to accommodate 20 ’, 40’, 45’, 48’, or 53’ containers. Gross platform loading capacities (including container tare weights) vary from 100,000 to 122,000 pounds.

A typical Stacktrain consists of 20 to 28 individual stackcars (carrying 200 to 280 containers) and operates at speeds in excess of 60 miles per hour.
